APEC 2017: Workshop on promoting innovation for start-ups

The Hanoitimes - In sidelines of the 2017 Asian – Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Ministry of Industry & Trade and APEC Secretariat have jointly held the APEC workshop on promoting innovation for start-ups from October 2 – 3 in Hanoi.
The objective of this workshop is to improve the process of experince and good practice exchange between APEC members, with an aim to promote innovation for start-ups; sharing experiences from the perspectives of managers and enterprises to increase the role and benefits of innovation for enterprises; thus, recommendations and ideas from the workshop will be submitted to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which will be held in the upcoming November in Da Nang. These efforts are expected to improve cooperation between APEC members in innovation.

Attending the workshop are representative of the government of APEC’s economic members; experts and guest speakers in fiels of Intellectual property, finance, enterprises, and representatives of some related associations from APEC’s economic members.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Director General of Multilateral Trade Policy Department, Ministry of Industry & Trade Luong Hoang Thai said, in the context of globalization, start-ups have shown their quick adaptability and development in new market, as such, the success of enterprsies has become the driving force for economic growth. In the current context, innovation for start-ups is one of the priorities and motivation for enterprise development, especially for newly established enterprieses. This is also the focus in supporting policies of Vietnamses government. In aware of opportunities and challenges, APEC’s economic members have promoted entrepreneurial spririt in forums and acitivies within the APEC’s framework. In particular, the joint statement of the recent 24th APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting (SMEMM 24) stated, economy with high innovative economy has high chance for economic growth than others, thus, innovation start-ups plays a key role in creating strong business environment for development. This is one of the 24th SMEEMM’s Initiative on Promoting Innovative Start-ups and Strategy for Green, Sustainable and Innovatie SMEs to “navigate the APEC ship toward bright future of prosperity for our people”, as the Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said.

Lasting in 02 days, the workshop is divided into 8 sessions which includes: (1) Overview of Innovation and start-ups in the APEC region: in this session, speakers gave an overview of innovation and start-ups in the region with focus on status, trends, key features, advantages and disadvantages. ; (2) Governments’ policies and strategies in fueling innovation-based start-ups: Start-ups face a lot of challenges. Among them, roles of governments are important in promoting start-ups to grow and develop. In this session, speakers focused on challenges for start-ups as well as sharing experiences in promoting start-ups from the perspective related to governments’ policies and strategies, incentives; (3) Roles of incubators/accelerators in innovation and technology transfer for start-ups: roles of incubators and accelerator in innovation and technology for start-ups will be highlighted. The session focused on challenges in promotion of innovation and technologies that start-ups face and sharing experiences of how to deal with those challenges from the perspective of both public and private sectors; (4) Case studies for Technology commercialization from Universities/Public funded research institution: case studies for Technology commercialization from Universities/Public funded research institution was presented with aims of sharing information, experiences to support start-ups to use technology commercializtion as an advantage for their start-ups; (5) Panel on innovative financing for start-ups: speakers shared information and experiences in accessing to financing and ongoing supportive initiatives (technical, human resources, etc.) for innovation based start-ups to develop their business; (6) Vietnam start-ups: representatives of Vietnamese start-ups that involved in innovation related areas or use innovation as an efficient tool for growth and development were invited to share their experiences in raising the ideas, nuturing and developing their business; (7) How to facilitate innovation for start-ups: speakers shared experiences in different start-up ecosystem (women start-up ecosystem, ecosystem in developed and developing countries); (8) Group breakout discussion: in this session, it was divided into two groups to discuss the question: (i) what is innovation and creativity and how start-up must leverage these factors to achieve sustainable growth and success; (ii) APEC roles in promoting innovation for start-ups.

With this being said, the Workshop on promoting innovation for start-ups is seen as Vietnam’s contribution to APEC’s objectives. This will be a platform and opportunity for start-ups grasping chances, sharing difficulties and challenges during the start-up process. At the same time, enterprises can receive useful tips from practical experiences and perspective of experts and economists.
