On December 31, Hanoi hosted two countdown events to welcome in the New Year 2017, one at August Revolution Square, with the participation of the orchestra from the Vietnam National Academy of Music, and another event at Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square with the participation of several renowned international DJs.
According to the city's authorities, many roads near Hoan Kiem were closed to vehicles on Saturday (Dec. 31) for the countdown party to usher in the promising New Year. Only emergency vehicles and the police can access the roads during the closures.

This year’s celebration was broadcast live on VTV1 channel starting at 9:45 p.m. Featured singers headlining this year’s celebration include My Linh, Phuong Uyen among others.
The special guest of honour is marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh who won the country’s first gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics. A video of Hoang’s historic win is expected to air in the waning moments of the year.
As is customary the roar of guns will ring out the old and usher in the new year, said city officials.

Major streets in HCM City, including Truong Son, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Ham Nghi, and Dong Khoi, are decorated with colored lights. Famous artists will perform at count-down parties at cultural houses and public stages.

Performances will also be held at university dormitories and industrial zones to entertain students and workers who can’t return to their home for the New Year holiday.
