Foreign visitors are impressed by the stunning landscapes and inhabitants of the north-western region while joining the Vietnam Mountain Marathon (VMM) in Sapa on September 22 to 24.
Accordingly, Tran Duy Quang, a Vietnamese national, won the 100km race at the fifth edition of the Vietnam Mountain Marathon (VMM). Quang beat rivals from all over the world, by running through the long, dark night over the highest peaks of Vietnam, to take the lead with a time of 13:17.35. Manolita Divina from the Philippines finished second, and the third place went to Matthew Johnston of the United States. On the women’s side, Kim Matthews of Australia triumphed with a time of 17:52.23, followed by Hoa Banh of Australia and Nguyen Thi Duong of Vietnam.
In the men’s 70km race, Graham Knight of Great Britain took the lead with a time of 9:03.22. Nguyen Quang of Vietnam and Julien Petit of France were the runners-up. The marathon, which concluded in Sa Pa on September 24, is one of the biggest ultra-running events in Asia and a landmark event on the Southeast Asia calendar.
Founded in 2013 by Topas Travel, the event has grown from 200 runners to 2,500 this year, making it one of the biggest ultra-running events in Asia and the landmark event on the Southeast Asia calendar. The runners from 50 nations will race distances ranging from 10km to 100km in Vietnam's highest mountains.
Winners of the longest distance race have hailed from Denmark, Czech Republic and Thailand. This year, however, there are high hopes for a Vietnamese winner in the longest distance.
