Updated at Friday, 15 Jan 2016, 09:42
The Hanoitimes - The Prime Minister recently approved adjustments to a master plan on the preservation and restoration of the Con Dao special national relic in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
The renovation will be made on an area of 110.69 hectares.
According to the plan, there will be no new construction in the functional and preservation zones. In addition to restoration and repairs made to deteriorating works, suitable signposts and instruction boards will be erected, keeping the site’s original aesthetic intact.
Some other architectures will be restored if they hold special historical values.
The master plan will be implemented between 2016 and 2030 in three phases: 2016-2020, 2021- 2025 and 2026-2030. It aims to honour revolutionary soldiers who laid down their lives for the national independence and freedom while creating diversified tourism products, and helping enhance local socio-economic development.
The Con Dao Islands were recently featured in Clarin – Argentina’s newspaper – as a compelling destination in Vietnam, despite their dark days in the past.

According to the article, lying in the southeast waters, Con Dao is striving to develop tourism, capitalising on unspoiled beaches, primeval forests and historical values.
During past wars, eight prisons were built across 52km of Con Son Island – the biggest of the archipelago. The cells were closed in 1975 when the resistance two wars against French and American forces ended, before opening to the public as a museum on war crimes in the 1990s.
Between 1862 and 1975, 200,000 Vietnamese, mainly patriots, were imprisoned and tortured, and around 20,000 of them died.
The once horrific place is now peaceful and welcomes some 50,000 tourists every year.
Con Dao prisons witnessed Vietnamese revolutionaries with staunch spirit endure the brutal torture of French colonialists, and later American imperialists, from 1930 to 1975. It was estimated that one prisoner died every day. Vietnam’s outstanding leaders, including late President Ton Duc Thang, late Party General Secretaries Le Duan and Nguyen Van Linh were held there.
The once horrific place is now peaceful and welcomes some 50,000 tourists every year.
Con Dao Island in the central province of Ba Ria - Vung Tau aims to become an international-standard spiritual and eco-tourism centre by 2030, according to a newly approved plan to develop the island.

Under the plan, the island will develop many areas, including Con Son Town, France Town in Con Son Town, a spiritual area, Ben Dam sea station, a natural beach, the Con Dao mountainous area and a system of small islands.
Tours connecting the main island to nearby sites and tours linking Con Dao Island to other provinces and cities will be organised.
Sitting 185 kilometres from Vung Tau city and 230 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, Con Dao plays a significant role in socio-economic, defence and security development in the country’s southern seas and islands.
It is also home to important tangible and intangible national cultural heritages presenting substantial potential to develop various forms of tourism such as ecological and spiritual tourism.
