The Hanoitimes - Tourism development in the coming time must focus on improving quality of products to obtain sustainable development and high competitiveness.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Huynh Van Ai made the statement at a workshop in Hanoi on August 29. He said Vietnam’s tourism has seen strong growth in recent years with the reception of 10 million international tourists and over 62 million domestic holiday makers in 2016. The total revenue was estimated at over 400 trillion VND (17.6 billion USD).
Vietnam’s tourism sector focuses on quality development.
In 2017, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has set the target of attracting 13 - 15 million foreign visitors and posting year-on-year growth of 30 - 50 percent, he said.
This is an ambitious goal, which requires maximum efforts of all sectors and people to turn the tourism sector into a spearhead economy. Head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Nguyen Van Tuan said Vietnam served over 8.47 million overseas holidaymakers in the first eight months of 2017.
According to the evaluation of the World Economic Forum for 2015 - 2017, Vietnam’s tourism competitive edge increased eight places to rank 67 out of the 136 global economies. The country is moving to build itself as a safe and environmentally-friendly destination to lure more visitors both at home and abroad in the future.
Meanwhile, at a meeting in Hanoi on August 3rd, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Ha Van Sieu said Vietnam has recorded vigorous tourism growth in recent years and is shifting its focus to the industry’s quality, efficiency, competitiveness, and sustainability so as to turn tourism into a spearhead sector.
The country welcomed more than 10 million foreign tourists in 2016, rising by 26 percent from 2015 and double the figure of 2010. It recorded 417 trillion VND (18.3 million USD) in tourism revenue from foreign tourists last year. About 7.25 million foreigners visited Vietnam in the first seven months of 2017, up 28.8 percent year-on-year.
According to Ha Van Sieu, tourism promotion has been expanded both at home and abroad. It is also being enhanced online, millions have accessed the country’s tourism websites.
Travel agencies have also made use of major events such as APEC Year 2017, 2016 Asian Beach Games, the UPU letter writing competition, Da Nang International Fireworks Festival and Hue Festival to popularise Vietnam.
